Monday was a stormy day in Perth. Making it a good day to go to the coast to watch the waves and see if the wind wafts any interesting birds to the coast. But it was a fabulous bit of action from an Osprey that really caught my eye! Initially I saw the Osprey plunging into the water just off the shore. Soon after I realised that it had caught a pretty big Sea Mullet and was having difficulties landing it!

It rested for a while in the very shallow water to get it’s strength back. Then it cleverly waited for an incoming wave to assist it bringing the fish off the sand and higher up the side of seagrass bank before working hard to get it onto the bank.

Then it could rest and enjoy all the hard work and enjoy a great feed!

Ospreys are interesting birds that can be found in many parts of the world. In fact they are seen in every continent except Antartica! In Australia we have the Eastern Osprey which is a subspecies that is mostly found along the coast and around islands. While they mainly eat fish, they have been known to also eat crustaceans, reptiles, mammals and other birds.
